Diaries [manuscript]. 1863-1875.

Contains: One small diary kept as midshipman on the Phoebe 14/4/1863-4/3/1865; One semi-official journal 1/2/1868-30/3/1870; Two volumes labelled "Private journal" 20/7/1870-24/4/1874 and 24/4/1874-14/3/1875; and one thick notebook of reminiscences of service on the Blanche, probably written later, relying on notes and recollections 1854-17/3/1869; The journals decribe scenery, emergent communities, the social round and historic and dramatic occasions. One volume is interspersed with a long account of a continental tour while on leave; In 1871 Norcock visited Hobart, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, giving his impressions of the colonial capitals and their society. There are a number of skilful pencil drawings of scenery, native shipping, historic sites and some loose documents collected on the voyages, such as samples of Chinese and Japanese printing, and the visiting card of a Siamese prince.

In 1862 Norcock was placed as a midshipman on the Pheobe 35 on a Mediterranean cruise and in 1867 on the sail and steam corvette Blanche on her maiden voyage, visiting Cape Town, Australia, N.Z. etc. Norcock was promoted to lieutenant in 1872 Jan. and subsequently served in the Thalia and Iron-Duke, visiting Japan, China, Vladivostok etc. From the description of Journals of Charles Norcock, 1863-1875 [microform].
